At least 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
