Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
