French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."

Now, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.

The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from government.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French officials will again be allowed to stop boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
