Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
