Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, lying 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his team ran a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running. Tsunoda lost control over the track edges before sliding over the run-off area, and was lucky to escape with just a minor contact of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho turn approaching the final corner on to the start-finish straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th place, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber P3, 0.619 seconds off the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
