One two-month voyage around Australia was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an older lady who was abandoned by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the party for a break. The ship departed without her and went back after some time after the crew discovered the passenger was missing.

An extensive rescue mission found her remains the next day.

Investigative bodies are examining the tragedy, together with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator announced that passengers and personnel on the vessel were notified that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he further stated that passengers would be provided a full refund, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also published an latest statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the ship in Cairns upon its return.

Sequence of Events

The liner initially left the Australian port on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the time of the 80-year-old's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the journey.

Travelers on the ship - who typically pay large sums of currency to join the voyage - were ferried there for a day trip with the choice of hiking or snorkelling.

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "stunned and distressed that the ship left the island after an scheduled outing without my parent".

In her statement, she described her mum as an "active 80-year-old" who was a member of a hiking club.

"Based on limited information we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she said.

She continued that she wished the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have done that might have preserved Mum's being".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a extremely warm afternoon, and mother became unwell on the hill climb," she explained.

"She was asked her to go back, alone. Then the ship departed, seemingly without conducting a passenger count.

Company Response
