The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
